The communities of the archive

Worlds bound together by sound

The percussion of the body, a danced language, a drum and women's voices. Each chapter is a community where the question who will receive this tradition? is sharpest.

    the cowbells

Macedo de Cavaleiros · Bragança · January and early February 2027

A boy fastens the belt of cowbells for the first time: he has heard that sound from the outside all his life, and now it is born from his own body — heavier and louder than he expected — as he learns to move.

the sticks, the bagpipe, the Mirandese

Miranda do Douro · Bragança · February to April 2027

    the adufe and the voices

    Idanha-a-Nova · Castelo Branco · March to the 3rd of May 2027

A girl sets her adufe against her grandmother's, matching the beat with her thumbs until, after a while, the two drums and the two voices become one — and the older woman stops correcting, and only listens.

Why now

These traditions do not die when a generation passes. They die at the quietest moment of all — when a child stops wanting to receive them.

That is the moment that matters to me. Not the spectacle of the festival, but the eve of it: the first mask on small shoulders, the first steps still out of time, the first words in a language the country has almost forgotten.

What this platform is

An archive, not a passing gallery

Image and sound meet here with the care of a publication. Every photograph rests on its own sound. The archive is edited, it grows with the chapters to come, and it is kept by the author.

The archive keeps growing.
